Blickfang auf dem malerischen Innenhof ist die eindrucksvoll überdachte Freitreppe. Den Torbogen Richtung Cattedrale flanieren zwei Bronzefiguren (Nicolò III. zu Pferde, Borso auf dem Thron).
A covered corridor once connected the Castelio Estense with the Palazzo Comunale., Which from 1243 to the 16th century the Este court palace was largely renovated in 1924. The impressive covered staircase is an eye-catcher on the picturesque courtyard. Two bronze figures (Nicolò III on horseback, Borso on the throne) stroll the arch towards the cathedral.

Staircase of the fifteenth century integrated into an old palace where today is the Municipality. Beautiful setting in a square with bars and restaurants where shows and various activities are held.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This beautiful little square ( Piazza del Municipio ) is full of charm, good atmosphere, beautiful covered staircase and nice palace facade. Access to this place means making a pleasant discovery. With a beautiful and rich history. Piazza Municipale was once the former court of honour of the Ducal Palace that is dominated by the magnificent Scalone d’Onore (stairway of honour) built by Pietro Benvenuto degli Ordini. These steps blend the Gothic Medieval elements like the Venetian style marble banisters with other obviously Renaissance style elements like the arches and the dome. The wing alongside the stairway presents elegant marble windows that denote the position of the living quarters of many Duchesses from the past and the most famous of whom was no doubt Lucrezia Borgia. We have now witnessed a cheese fair that Ferrara is well known for.
