Entrando attraverso ad un arco ci si trova tra le rovine poi si passa all'interno da un portone ed anche qui la meraviglia! Le colonne e le arcate sono asimmetriche, altissime e spoglie. Ha grande fascino. Fanno visite guidate Splendid jewel dated about 1000 years beautiful in its grandeur and simplicity. S	Stefano Masnaghetti on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Insieme con il Battistero di San Giovanni ad Fontes, la Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore forma uno dei complessi monumentali più misteriosi ed affascinanti d'Italia. La chiesa attuale è databile al 1025 circa, ma prima di questa ne sorgeva senz'altro una precedente all'anno Mille: a testimoniarlo ci sono le rovine poste di fronte alla facciata odierna, le quali formavano le prime tre arcate della struttura perduta, s'ipotizza distrutta da un terremoto (1177) o dall'incendio che il Barbarossa appiccò alla Rocca di Lomello nel 1155. Oggi formano un involontario e fantasmagorico pronao, perfetta cornice alle bellezze della basilica vera e propria, fra gli esempi meglio conservati di primissimo romanico lombardo (ma c'è chi la cataloga addirittura come proto-romanica), che sarà presa a modello per l'edificazione di molti altri luoghi di culto a venire (si pensi soltanto che fu tra le prime chiese a presentare le volte a crociera). Visitarla è stata un'esperienza emozionante. P.S. Gentilissimo il volontario che ci ha accolti all'ingresso, prodigo di spiegazioni e aneddoti sulla storia della chiesa e di Lomello. Together with the Baptistery of San Giovanni ad Fontes, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore forms one of the most mysterious and fascinating monumental complexes in Italy. The present church dates back to around 1025, but before it there was certainly a previous one to the year 1000: to testify it there are the ruins placed in front of the present facade, which formed the first three arches of the lost structure, s 'hypothesized destroyed by an earthquake (1177) or by the fire that Barbarossa started at the Rocca di Lomello in 1155. Un tempo contea dei Franchi (c'è ancora il castello dei conti Palatini) , il paese è diventato un piccolo centro dislocato tra le risaie e contiene, al suo interno, questo capolavoro del romanico che unito al battistero ed alla piazza, perfettamente conservati, forma uno dei luoghi più interessanti dell'intera Lomellina. Assolutamente da vedere. Lomello is the place that gave the name to the Lomellina area.
