The Basilica of Saint Nicholas was built towards the end of the 11th century to house and venerate the relics of Saint Nicholas that arrived in Bari on May 9, 1087 from the homonymous church of Myra in Lycia. It represents the prototype of the Pugliese Romanesque style and is inserted between the spaces of the old fortified city, already occupied by the Court of Catapano. It is the main element of the Cittadella Nicolaiana, together with the buildings built over time that comprise: - the church of San Gregorio, the oldest church in the city still consecrated; - Convent; - the library and archive of the Basilica in which the documentation on paper and parchments of great historical interest is kept; - the Centro Studi Nicolaiani; - the so-called Portico dei Pellegrini (today totally destroyed due to the restoration works of the 1950s), located in the area that today is occupied by the San Nicolás Secondary School; - the Nicolaiano Museum, inaugurated on February 6, 2010, in which all the precious pieces from the Archives and Treasury of the Basilica are exhibited. For hundreds of years, the Cittadella Nicolaiana, for security reasons, has been surrounded by solid walls interrupted by three doors that allowed entry: from Via Palazzo di Città, from the Angevin arch and from Via Vanese. The Basilica is in turn surrounded by three squares, today in direct continuation between them, as a result of the restoration works carried out in the last century that have significantly modified the urban installation. In the Thirties, before the construction of the promenade, the eastern slope was flanked by the sea; At that time, the main access street to the square was the “ruga Fragigena” corresponding to the current plan of Via Palazzo di Città, a route that the pilgrims followed to honor the patron saint, a meeting point between East and West.

For those visiting Bari, surely the Basilica of San Nicola is the first stop and perhaps the most important. The Basilica was built at the end of the 12th century to house the relics of the Saint that came to Bari from the city of Myra in Licia. The Basilica is a wonderful representation of the Romanesque churches in Puglia. The interior has a trussed roof and is crossed by three large transverse arches (added to stabilize the church after an earthquake in the 15th century). The crypt characterized by 26 columns with Romanesque capitals houses the remains of San Nicola.
