Early Christian frescoes. Only suitable for art historians. Located in the middle of the cemetery of Oleggio. In front of the cemetery wall you have a magnificent view of the Monte Rosa massif.

Innanzitutto l'antichità della chiesa: menzionata per la prima volta nel 973, l'attuale edificio fu probabilmente eretto nel corso dell'XI Secolo, in forme che fanno intuire le sue origini preromaniche; il portale d'ingresso scentrato, l'asimmetria generale delle tre navate, l'affascinante cripta posta sotto il presbiterio, a sua volta rialzato e raggiungibile tramite una breve scalinata, le tre absidi semicircolari sono tutti segni di una concezione architettonica arcaica, di chiara origine longobarda. Bellissime anche le mura esterne, in cui i mattoni rossi sono amalgamati in misura quasi pari ai ciottoli di fiume, a testimoniare, oltre la vicinanza del Ticino, il carattere collinare della basilica, a metà strada fra il laterizio del romanico della bassa padana e la pietra di quello alpino. D'inestimabile valore è poi l'interno, in cui accanto a dipinti di epoca più tarda si possono ammirare rarissimi e sbalorditivi resti di affreschi autenticamente romanici, i più antichi dei quali databili all'XI Secolo. The Basilica of San Michele is one of the most precious treasures of the early Romanesque Novara. The reasons of interest are manifold, and all of very high value. First of all, the antiquity of the church: mentioned for the first time in 973, the current building was probably erected during the 11th century, in forms that hint at its pre-Romanesque origins; the off-center entrance portal, the general asymmetry of the three naves, the fascinating crypt under the presbytery, in turn raised and reachable via a short staircase, the three semicircular apses are all signs of an archaic architectural conception, clearly Lombard origin. The external walls are also very beautiful, in which the red bricks are blended to an extent almost equal to the river pebbles, to testify, besides the proximity of the Ticino, the hilly character of the basilica, halfway between the Romanesque brick of the lower Po and the stone of the alpine one. The interior is of inestimable value, in which next to paintings of a later period one can admire very rare and stunning remains of authentically Romanesque frescoes, the oldest of which date back to the 11th century.

La cripta è notevole. Importante e un po’ misterioso Il ciclo di affreschi originali che, purtroppo, non sono in buono stato (sarebbe davvero provvidenziale un intervento di conservazione). Beautiful example of Romanesque, which certainly deserves a visit: simple in its almost intact structure, it still knows how to convey that suggestive spiritual sensitivity, so corresponding to our heart. The crypt is remarkable. Important and somewhat mysterious The cycle of original frescoes which, unfortunately, are not in good condition (conservation work would be truly providential).

Un plauso all'amministrazione comunale che ha deciso di tenere sempre aperta questa Chiesa con gli stessi orari del Cimitero in modo che si possa visitare senza restrizioni di giorni ed orari. Da non perdere A semi hidden treasure but a must visit. A unique example of early Romanesque with a very interesting crypt, which can also be visited. A praise to the municipal administration which has decided to always keep this church open with the same hours as the Cemetery so that it can be visited without restrictions of days and times. Entrate e, se volete, cantate un Alleluja o sostate in silenzio nella semplice cripta: un modo per gioire assieme a quelle pareti e volte, antiche e irregolari.
