La chiesa ebbe diverse fasi costruttive: nel 1528, come già affermato nel libro del Santoro, il Comune di Vizzini la ingrandì; nel 1721 fu ricostruita ad opera di Antonio Bonaiuto di Siracusa e divenne la più grande della città; nel 1860 Giuseppe Failla, capomastro locale, portò a termine la seconda sopraelevazione. La chiesa che vediamo oggi è quella progettata da G.B. Giarrusso di Vizzini dopo il terremoto del 1693. La Basilica si presenta, internamente a croce latina a tre navate di tipo tardo rinascimentale, al centro della croce si erge una altissima cupola; il suo prospetto e il campanile di pietra intagliata sono in stile barocco. Nella Basilica sono custoditi un pregiato organo barocco-rococò e apprezzate tele raffiguranti la deposizione della Croce, la Madonna con S. Giuseppe, S. Filippo, e un'antica Via Crucis su tela ad olio. Ai lati dell’altare maggiore sono poste le statue di S. Giuseppe col Bambino Gesù, della Vergine addolorata che tiene il Corpo di Gesù con a lato San Giovanni Evangelista La basilica di S. Giovanni Battista, fu eretta parrocchia autonoma nel 1931 da mons.
