★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great old church in the middle of the plaza. Has some real character. One evening we saw a wedding reception in the plaza in front of the church.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The upper part of the façade is striking with that golden mosaic, while the rest of the building looks rather common honestly. The interior of the church is nice, nothing striking nor outstanding, in my humble opinion, but yet worth a visit if you're near the amphitheater.

Inside, this basilica is filled with outstanding artworks including the frescoes by Amico Aspertini in the Cappella Sant’Agostino from 1508-09, Jacopo della Quercia’s carved polyptych (1422), Masseo Civitali’s unique Assumption of the Virgin from the end of the 15th century in the Cappella della Santissimo Sacramento, and the extraordinary baptismal font carved by three different 12th-century sculptors amongst others.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ? Nice basilica! Fridianus (Frediano) was an Irish bishop of Lucca in the first half of the 6th century. He had a church built on this spot, dedicated to St. Vincent, a martyr from Zaragoza, Spain. When Fridianus was buried in this church, the church was renamed Ss. Frediano and Vincenzo. Soon afterwards, a community of Augustinian canons was growing around this church. In the Longobard era, the church and the canon house were enlarged. In 1104, this order was recognized by Pope Paschal II. The prior of St. Frediano was later accorded a rank equal in dignity to that of a bishop.
The church acquired its present appearance of a typical Roman basilica during the period 1112-1147. In the 13th-14th centuries the striking façade was decorated with a huge golden 13th century mosaic representing The Ascension of Christ the Saviour with the apostles below. Berlinghiero Berlinghieri designed it in a Byzantine/medieval style.
Several chapels of the nobility were added in the 14th-16th centuries. These are lavishly decorated with paintings.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The ancient cathedral of Lucca, built by saint Fred the irish in person by the legend, it got litterally "turned around" with the construction of the new city walls a few centuries back. Santa Zita lays here. The facade is adorned with a magnificent mosaic.
