Una pequeña iglesia en una plaza pequeñita.
A small church in a tiny square.

Church of St. Christopher, located on piazza Tolomei, is one of the oldest temple buildings in Siena. The first mention of it dates back to 1087. In the XII-XIII centuries, there were meetings of the Council of the Bell, the main governing body of the Siena Republic. Initially, the facade of the church was created on the model of the leaning temples of Pisa: it was covered with stripes of black and white marble and decor in the form of rhombuses. At the end of the XVI century, the church was expanded by the architect Vanni. The Romanesque structure of the XI century was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1798, and was rebuilt at the end of the XVIII century. The new brick facade of the church was erected in neoclassical forms around 1800 by Tommaso and Francesco Pagagnini. Four Doric columns carry an entablature and a pediment that adorns the large stone coat of arms of the Tolomei family. Statues of the blessed Bernard Tolomei and Nera Tolomei in niches were created by Giuseppe Silini in 1802. On the facade is a statue of St. Catherine of Siena, who also attended this church.

Chiesa storica senese affacciata in Piazza Tolomei.
Historic Sienese church overlooking Piazza Tolomei. Full of atmosphere and meaning, it remains one of the Sienese landmarks. Anyone who goes to Siena cannot fail to notice it and stop to admire it to breathe some real Sienese atmosphere. Highly recommended, to live absolutely. Especially under the Palio days.

It is one of the seats of the university chapel of Siena together with the nearby church of San Vigilio. It is celebrated every weekday. To the left of the church, taking a small road, you can access the small and collected internal cloister. It is home to the Daughters of the Church sisters. It is possible for students to study in peace in the cloister and in the rooms that open onto it.

Krzysztofa daje możliwość chwili wytchnienia i zadumy.
Regardless of the centuries-old history of St. Christopher, probably dating back to the end of the 11th century (today's temple, rebuilt after the destruction in the 17th or 18th century), it is a place worth visiting by all means. Not only because of the rich history and interesting, though modest interior. As there are many monuments and places in Siena that "all tourists must visit", the Church of St. Krzysztof gives the opportunity for a moment of respite and reflection.

To the left of the entrance to the church, a small gallery leads into a cloister, a veritable 'jewel' well hidden in the center of the city of the Palio. Extraordinary art exhibitions are hosted under the vaults.

Piccola sorpresa romanica!
Little Romanesque surprise! This church stands exactly along the old Francigena, just like S. Pietro alla Magione and S.Andrea, and it also deserves attention. Nothing to say about the brick facade and interior of this church, which has been remodeled over the centuries. But the best is in the back, where its Romanesque origin can be clearly seen: the apse in fact has the lower part in squared stone blocks, a the upper part in brick. Also in the back, a beautiful little brick cloister (pay attention to some of the capitals) in which to relax, and which sometimes hosts interesting exhibitions. It is worth remembering that the oratory of the Civetta district was originally located in S.Cristoforo ... And according to an unconfirmed theory, San Cristoforo would rise above the temple of Minerva, which the Owl had as a sacred animal ...
