Il complesso monastico di San Benedetto,di cui oggi restano la Chiesa,il campanile e il chiostro,fu eretto tra l'XI e il XII secolo sui resti della Chiesa di Santa Maria Veterana.La Chiesa,in stile romanico,consta di tre navate divise da colonne ed è caratterizzata dalla presenza di un insieme organico di volte,crociere ed archi trasversi che rappresentano un caso unico nel panorama architettonico pugliese.Sul portale è possibile ammirare degli intrecci vimineo di fine fattura che evidenziano influenze lombarde e bizantine.Il Chiostro fu costruito con elementi di recupero nel XII secolo e poi modificato ancora nel XVIII. La presenza delle Benedettine in città ebbe termine nel 1866,in seguito al provvedimento soppressivo. One of the most beautiful and historic churches in the city of Brindisi. CHURCH OF SAN BENEDETTO. The statue of the Madonna has a history behind it. The lectern at the altar is a repurposed Roman sarcophagus. Unfortunately, the silver items that once lined the back wall were stolen, so don't be embittered if you find it closed-- there is good reason for locking the doors.
