Menzionata per la prima volta in un documento del 958, la pieve, oggi scomparsa (ma con tracce evidenti lasciate sul terreno), era intitolata a S. Gerusalemme e a S. Giovanni Battista. Se la dedicazione a S. Giovanni Battista è comune a tutte le chiese dotate di fonte battesimale, quella a S. Gerusalemme è tipica del periodo precedente alla dominazione longobarda, elemento, questo, che fa ritenere antichissima la sua fondazione. Il fatto poi che sui terreni circostanti al sito siano state rinvenute nel 1883 tre lastre marmoree con epitaffi sepolcrali, due dei quali attribuiti ai primi decenni del I secolo d.C. e uno al II o III secolo d.C, ha ulteriormente rafforzato l’idea di una “plebs Camaiani” di probabile fondazione tardoantica, sorta su un precedente cimitero pagano.

Mentioned for the first time in a document of 958, the parish, now disappeared (but with evident traces left on the ground), was dedicated to St. Jerusalem and St. John the Baptist. If the dedication to St. John the Baptist is common to all churches equipped with a baptismal font, that of St. Jerusalem is typical of the period preceding the Lombard domination, an element which suggests that its foundation is very ancient. The fact that in 1883 three marble slabs with sepulchral epitaphs were found on the land surrounding the site, two of which are attributed to the first decades of the 1st century AD. and one in the second or third century AD, further strengthened the idea of a "plebs Camaiani" probably founded in late antiquity, built on a previous pagan cemetery.
