Cited for the first time in a document of the year 951, it was originally a church dedicated to Santa Maria, and was consecrated in 1062 by the diocesan bishop, future Pope Alexander II. The mighty bell tower was perhaps part of the city defense system. In 1306 it was annexed to the church and modified. The small pavilion roof on the top, designed by the then Bishop of Pescia Donato Maria Arcangeli, dates back to 1771. In 1671 the building was completely demolished, and in 1684 a radical reconstruction project was started. On that occasion the original structure was drastically modified according to the taste of the time, and only the bell tower remained of the ancient structure with three naves and, on the left side, wall portions decorated with shelves and blind arcades. In 1895 the architect G. Castellucci realized the complex façade in pietra serena, integrated in 1933 with the magnificent marble portal. Equipped with a base sculpted and punctuated on the first order by Corinthian semi-columns and on the second by pilaster strips, it is characterized by the interlocking of two broken pediments on top of which stands the city coat of arms. Its elevation as a Cathedral, decreed by Pope Benedict XIII, dates back to 17 March 1727. Thanks to an important restoration, which lasted several months, the Duomo returned to its former glory. Crossing the Holy Door, "the infinitely small" envelops us.
