Re: Bus rental, Oct. 24-25, 2017 Autoservizi Rosario Pappalardo V.le Vittoria Veneto 281, Catania, Italy This report of unsatisfactory service prepared by: Michael Stoughton, Professor Emeritus, Department of Art History University of Minnesota, U.S.A. (Note: I speak Italian fluently.) Even before using the bus service, a problem developed concerning the billeting of the driver and parking of the bus for the one night involved. There was not enough room in the agriturismo where the group was staying so I booked a room in a nearby b and b with parking on the street. On Oct. 23, a company representative insisted that that was not good enough since the bus had to be in a protected area, it was new and beautiful. (Yet the toilet did not work and there was nothing special about it.) The company picked the place, adding 50 euros unexpectedly to the budget. On Oct. 24, after the morning in Noto, the first stop with the bus, the driver, Lorenzo, insisted that we were not going to the next stop, to the Villa del Casale (the ancient Roman villa site) near Piazza Armerina (the nearby city). His schedule listed Villa del Casale and he maintained that numerous cities on Sicily had that name so it could be anywhere. My schedule, also from the bus company, listed Piazza Armerina and the fact that I had prepaid to the bus company 20 euros for the parking there. I won that heated, emotional interchange, although we departed late and our time at the Villa was cut short. I gave the driver money to pay for his lodging, and insisted that he give me a receipt for the room, and also receipts for money spent on food. The next morning I got the room, but not the food, receipt. I asked why not and he brushed the matter aside. I told him that I had to have, at least, a list of his food expenses. I had to present something to the University of Minnesota for reimbursement. I had decided by this time that Lorenzo’s tip would not be bigger than 25 euros and, twice, during the second day, asked him for a list of food expenses. Again, he brushed the matter aside, so I decided that his tip would be 50 euros, 25 for food, even without receipts or a list. At Palermo, our final destination, I gave Lorenzo an envelop with 50 euros and thanked him on behalf of the group. When he looked in the envelope, a short while later, he became noticeably upset with me, and brought up the matter of his food expenses. I reminded him again about receipts, or at least a list. He asked for 50 euros (an exaggeration, for some fruit, and one meal at his place of lodging) which I gave him simply to conclude the unfortunate experience.
