Il Palazzo degli Spagnoli è un’importante costruzione all’incrocio tra corso Alfieri e via Teatro Alfieri. Oggi imponente ma anonima, non dimostra di essere uno dei luoghi più ricchi di storia della città. Fu fatto edificare a fine ‘400 dal capitano di ventura Giangiacomo Trivulzio, quando venne nominato nel 1494 governatore di Asti da Carlo VIII, re di Francia. Questi costruì la propria splendida residenza in città, acquistando dalla famiglia Falletti un gruppo di costruzioni nobili di origine medioevale, prospicienti la via Maestra (attuale Corso Alfieri). Ristrutturate a tempo di record, divennero un sontuoso palazzo a pianta quadrata con una importante corte interna, porticata a colonne con capitelli, di cui ancora oggi si può ammirare una manica. A metà ‘500 il nipote Gianfrancesco Trivulzio, cedette il palazzo all'amministrazione di Carlo V di Spagna, che lo destinò ad ospedale per i soldati spagnoli che presidiavano la città. Da qui il suo nome. Nel 1587, terminato il presidio spagnolo ad Asti, passò a Corrado Asinari, vescovo di Vercelli, signore di Costigliole e governatore pontificio di Ascoli, Spoleto, Perugia, dell'Umbria e della città di Roma, altro personaggio storico di eccezionale importanza. Nel 1694 l’erede di Corrado, Ghiron Roberto Asinari di San Marzano, vendette il palazzo per 15.000 lire al Comune di Asti. Il contratto venne però impugnato dal fratello del venditore che ritenne non congruo il prezzo; ne nacque un lungo contenzioso. A risolvere definitivamente la questione ci pensò la guerra tra Piemonte e Francia, iniziata nel 1704, che colpì anche Asti, obbligando il Comune a recedere dal contratto, rinunciandovi definitivamente. A fine Settecento il Palazzo venne poi venduto a tal Giuseppe Torre, che, secondo le dicerie del popolino, aveva trovato un tesoro di monete e oggetti preziosi nella cantina della casa dove abitava in affitto. Il Torre fece tramezzare ed abbassare gli imponenti saloni ricavandovi molti alloggi, e vi aprì un'osteria con annesso albergo.

The Palazzo degli Spagnoli is an important building at the intersection of Corso Alfieri and Via Teatro Alfieri. Today impressive but anonymous, it does not prove to be one of the richest places in the city's history. In 1694 the heir of Corrado, Ghiron Roberto Asinari of San Marzano, sold the building for 15,000 lire to the Municipality of Asti. However, the contract was challenged by the seller's brother who deemed the price to be inadequate; a long dispute arose. The war between Piedmont and France, which began in 1704 and which also affected Asti, forced the Municipality to withdraw from the contract, definitively renouncing it. At the end of the eighteenth century the Palazzo was then sold to Giuseppe Torre, who, according to the rumors of the populace, had found a treasure trove of coins and precious objects in the cellar of the house where he lived for rent. The Tower had the imposing halls partitioned and lowered, obtaining many lodgings, and there was an inn with an attached hotel.
