★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A pretty fountain in a nice square close to the church with the interesting bell tower. Worth stopping by if you are in Messina. Plenty of shade to take a rest in. There are hustlers selling hats etc around, but they don't seem to bother you too much once you've told them no

Then all of a sudden, the people disappear :-) to explore other parts of Messina. A popular landmark of the Messina...
Ente Ecclesiastico Basilica Cattedrale Di Messina AKA Il Duomo is not to be missed. If you want some peace, the church is your refuge. And the Astronomical Clock (Orologio Astronomico) if you are lucky to witness the dancing statues, it's fun! Behind the church is a monument dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin Mary in 1758. For the prayerful tourists, it's fitting to say a little prayer before the beautiful image of Mama Mary.

Next to the fountain is a plaque with brief history of Orion's fountain from when and why it was erected in the very early 1500's.
Good to see how it still stands after many earthquakes and efforts to restore it.
Unfortunately, poor upkeeping show cracked marbles and weeds growing between stones.
