National Museum Of Prehistory Della Valle Camonica

The Valle Camonica is famous throughout the world for its extraordinary complex of representations engraved on the rocks, mostly dating back to prehistoric times. Therefore, if the iconographic heritage of these ancient populations is known to the general public, the aspects of their daily life, which only emerged in the last 30 years, are less known thanks to numerous preventive archeology and research carried out in the Valley. To these communities, which from the Iron Age will be known as Camunni, there are various inhabited areas, workplaces, places of worship and burials. The National Museum of Prehistory, housed in the ancient building of Villa Agostani in the historic center of Capo di Ponte, integrates, with the exhibit, the heritage of images engraved on the rocks and recomposes, in an inseparable whole, the expression of identity of the Valle Camonica. The visit begins on the ground floor: here, in a series of vaulted rooms, the theme of the sacred is developed. The megalithic shrines of the Copper Age, which continues in the tensile structure on the back. Over 50 historiated steles and boulders allow us to understand the characteristics of the megalithic shrines of the Copper Age (4th-3rd millennium BC): Cemmo, Bagnolo, Ossimo-Anvoia and Ossimo - Pat. These are finds of particular suggestion and, in some cases, of imposing size, which make the Valley participate in the extended phenomenon of European megalithism. The itinerary continues to the second floor where, in a large hall, the sections dedicated to material culture are illustrated: the first population of the Valley in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic, the neolithization and the transformation of the environment, the inhabitants, the places of work, the burials and, in an ideal resumption of the section on the ground floor, aspects and places of worship of protohistory. Magnificent place surrounded by nature where we retrace and find elements of the past of our ancestors. A dip in history and culture. To be seen!! With the same ticket you can also visit the museum located a few minutes away in the town.
