Update december 2021: This museum is open! (at the moment it's also a vaccin centre, but the museum is still open) Just go to the entrance and they will let you in for free.

Great helpful staff, free entrance to a lovely modern museum with good information. We spend about an hour and a half there which is a nice way to cool down from the afternoon sun.

Free entrance. I was given a book as a gift by the museum staff that is about modern artists whose artistic pieces were exposed at the museum exhibition. The museum staff also gave me a poster of the one of those artists in a nice cotton bag free of charge. Lecce Provincial Museum is dedicated to the duke Castromediano, and it's the most ancient in Puglia. It houses a rich collection of finds belonging to the Messapian civilization and Roman settlements, among which terracotta, inscriptions, statues and Attic and Apulian vases. Located on the upper floor, the Art Gallery accommodates paintings ranging from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, which bear witness to the Byzantine and Venetian influences on the creativity of local artists.

Free museum of early Salento settlement and development. The building itself internally is interesting and nicely done. Most of the exhibits have English translations and are laid out well. The story of the area is told clearly and in a diverting manner. It's also open late, so when I went it was very peaceful. Only two issues I had: 1. Pointless modern art. It's not needed. What is there is enough! 2. Fish tanks showing how some exhibits were found. Far too small if you're putting fish in them. I feel its cruel to put such large fish in a place like that. We don't need the fish to see its underwater!

One of my dreams was to look at the Roman and Greec vases, in movies and photos they looked so out of this world, and indeed they are. The detail with which they were crafted as well as the work to maintain them in good shape has really yield results and it shows. Is a must see place here in Lecce.
