Small pearl of the Apennines. Well looked after and maintained by a wonderful group of volunteers. Worth a visit to combine with the nearby birch forest.

Qui si raccontano l'ambiente e la storia delle montagne dell'Appennino modenese dove la castagna era il pane e l'economia era di pura sussistenza e grande fatica. Una visita alle poche ma ricche stanze del museo dovrebbe essere obbligatoria per farci ricordare quanto siamo fortunati adesso che viviamo, anche se non tutti, in un diffuso benessere. La gentilissima signora Mirella si prodiga, se richiesta, in interessanti spiegazioni sugli oggetti e sul loro nome nel dialetto del luogo, intrattenendo sorridendo i visitatori con simpatici aneddoti. Nell'edificio di fronte al museo troviamo il museo laboratorio del borlengo, dove si tengono corsi per imparare a preparare questa gustosa specialità locale. Numerosi pannelli raccontano i segreti dei borlenghi, dei ciaci (o Ciacci) e delle tigelle, o meglio delle crescentine cotte nelle tigelle (dischi di materiale refrattario da scaldare accanto al camino). L'interesse del museo e l'amenità del luogo ne rendono la visita irrinunciabile. A short distance from the main nucleus of the inhabited area of Zocca there is this small but very interesting museum that we can define "of our memory". Nel mezzo del verde e a pochi passi da Zocca potrete immergervi in un ambiente calmo e sereno e scoprire la realtà di un passato che ancor oggi ci accompagna. Adiacente al Museo del Castagno è sito il miglior posto per scoprire come dare vita ai miglior borlenghi mai mangiati e a come si cucinano crescentine/tigelle! Se non volete accamparvi con tende o camper c’è anche la possibilità di dormire nell’Antico ospitale San Giacomo, un ostello ben fornito e pulito. IL centro documentazionecmuseo del castagno e del borlengo nasce nel 2000 al piano terra dell'antico ospitale di Dan Giacomo di Zocca .La struttura menzionata per la prima volta in un documento del 1186 in passato era gestita dai frati e dava alloggio ai pellegrini che attraversavano queste terre per raggiungere la città Santa . IL museo e costituito da tre sale e ripercorre la storia della castagna attraverso gli oggetti ad essa legati ..nelle due stanze laterali si trovano gli strumenti per la cura del castagneto ..e per la lavorazione dei prodotti , nella sala centrale invece una serie di pannelli illustrano i caratteri dell'albero di castagno tipico della zona ..la sua distribuzione nazionale , europea , e nel mondo ..le malattie , e gli innesti .Un angolo della sala chiamato Fanta castagneto e utilizzato per ricostruire l'habitat e consente ai ragazzi di toccarne con mano le caratteristiche . IL percorso prosegue anche all'esterno e si inoltra lungo un sentiero pianeggiante nel cuore dei castagneti di Monte Dan Giacomo ..il sentiero e articolato in 13 tappe , e attrezzato con cartelli , l'itinerario si conclude nel bosco delle Betulle .
