Museum that tells 2500 years of Campania history

I returned to visit the Museum on the occasion of the #DomenicaAlMuseo, last May 1st. From 2018 I was missing, and I noticed a greater enrichment of the exhibited masterpieces. The rooms are well set up, each with a theme introduced by a panel that gives a truly elegant touch to the tourist itinerary. In addition, there was also the collection of the De Chiara De Maio Foundation, thanks to which it was possible to observe a Picasso and a Modigliani up close. Beautiful initiative, worthy of a valid European museum!

The Provincial Campano Museum of Capua (also known as the Campano Museum) is a historical and archaeological museum of ancient Campania and Terra di Lavoro. The archaeological section houses the most important world collection of Matres Matutae, coming from the area of ​​ancient Capua, and a large part of the archaeological finds of the Patturelli Fund, as well as numerous pre-Roman finds. There is also a large lapidary now named after Theodor Mommsen for his fundamental contribution to his institution. The medieval section instead collects important sacred and secular testimonies of Capua including the remains of the more than once demolished Porta di Capua while the art gallery collects works by Bartolomeo Vivarini, Cristoforo Scacco, Giacinto Brandi, Giuseppe Marullo and above all the most substantial collection of works by Francesco Liani. It is owned by the Province of Caserta. It is based in Palazzo Antignano which dates back to the 9th century and incorporates the Lombard church of San Lorenzo ad Crucem and one of the three noble seats of the city. The Renaissance building is of primary interest for the splendid portal (with the coats of arms of the Antignano and d'Alagno) and for the structure of the internal courtyard. The heritage consists of three nuclei: archeology, the most dignified and important with sculptures, painted vases, bronzes, objects of use, lapidary and mosaics; the art and history core (paintings, sculptures and relics), the library and archive, with evidence of crucial importance for the knowledge of Capua and the Terra di Lavoro. Unmissable masterpieces are the collection of the "Mothers" and the "mater matuta" (6th - 2nd century BC), the surviving sculptures of the arch built by Frederick II of Swabia (1234-1239) and the coin cabinet (6th century . BC - 19th century AD) gift from the Garofano-Venosta family.

A museum worthy of the name. The path is not well defined, but in the end you can see everything. I recommend you visit it, lots of themed works. Buy the guide at a cost of € 5 are well spent

One of the best museums visited, full of history. Very rare and some unique finds! Little known, I recommend a guided tour.
