Monumento al Generale Giardino

A symbolic monument to Bassano del Grappa, which identifies its history, especially during the First World War.

The monument is located in the center of the avenue, the statue of Marshal Giardino looks towards the peaks of Grappa, where his IV army fought during the Great War. Initially the monument was designed as a funerary aedicule to house the mortal remains of the general, who preferred to be buried on the Grappa among his soldiers who rest inside the Cima Grappa Military Memorial.

In Viale delle Fosse, in front of the Porta delle Grazie, where once there was a FOUNTAIN, here is this monument to Gaetano Giardino (Asti 25/01/1864 - Turin 11/21/1935), who was an Italian military and politician. In 1926 he became Marshal of Italy. He was the commander of the IV Army, since February 1918, which defended the Grappa Massif, the last natural obstacle between the front and the Venetian plain. (National Fascist Party) and the city of Turin donated this monument to the city of Bassano del Grappa. The General played a decisive role in the construction of the Monte Grappa Memorial and there he wanted to be buried, near the dead soldiers. When he died in Turin, he was temporarily buried in the Ossuary Temple of Bassano, in the center of the crypt, only to be finally buried in the Grappa Memorial.
