J	John Lancaster on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ On an outcrop outside the city stands this stunning castle, built for Ferdinand Maximillian, younger brother of Franz Joseph, emperor of Austria. It's a good idea to read about the full history of the castle before you go, or tour it with a guide as it has such a tragic history. Maximillian supervised the design and build, intending it for himself and wife to live in but he became emperor of Mexico and was executed 3 years later, so never saw it completed. The building has a beautiful exterior all the way round and the original rooms inside have also been beautifully maintained. There are lovely gardens to walk around and large grounds with imported exotic plants and trees. There are views over the gulf of Trieste and the castle's harbour from where Maximillian sailed is still intact. The lower floor of the castle is accessible for a wheelchair, as are the paths round the gardens and outbuildings. I would certainly recommend this as a highlight of a visit to Trieste.

The audio guide is not nevessary, you get all the info you need on the posts in the room. The audio guide is too long, talks too much. Too bad the coffee shop was not up to castle standards, more like a tourist trap.
