Also in this case, in the Roman Forum, there is no monument but the historical memory of something that no longer exists, something that as a tour guide I try to explain to make people understand the greatness of ancient Rome. Today only a block of marble with reliefs can be seen, but the so-called Milliarium Aureum was a symbol of the centrality and universality of Rome.
The translation is Pietra Miliare Aurea and it was a small column with a bronze coating that had, on the base, engravings indicating the distance, in Roman miles, between the city and some important cities and villages scattered throughout what was the empire of era. It was Augustus, around 20 BC. in fact, to erect the monument.
The true meaning of this column is therefore well understood: Rome was the center of the then known world.
