Gran parte della cinta muraria medievale è stata smantellata ma alcune tracce originarie sono ancora visibili fra Porta Romana o di Santa Maria e la Rocca Perugina come tra la Porta Fiorentina e la Torre del Vescovo.
Nel 1188 Perugia afferma il proprio dominio su Castrum Plebis e realizza una possente cinta muraria lunga oltre tre chilometri a circondare tutto l'altipiano su cui sorge oggi la città.
Castel della Pieve sarà il nuovo nome attribuito al vecchio castrum longobardo, ormai trasformato in avamposto militare da Perugia per le proprie necessità difensive verso Orvieto e Siena.
Delle quattro porte principali, la Porta Perugina o di San Francesco e quella del Castello sono state demolite nei secoli XIX e XX.
Delle numerose fortificazioni innalzate lungo le mura, oltre alla Torre di Casa Verri, rimane quella detta del Vescovo, per essere stata fin dal 1572 nelle possidenze vescovili.
Sul lato rivolto verso la città si trova una grande apertura ogivale all'interno della quale erano collocati ballatoi e scale di legno per l'uso delle macchine belliche.
The Bishop's Tower
Most of the medieval walls have been dismantled but some original traces can still be seen between Porta Romana or Santa Maria and the Rocca Perugina as between the Porta Fiorentina and the Torre del Vescovo.
In 1188 Perugia affirms its dominion over Castrum Plebis and realizes a mighty city wall over three kilometers long to surround the whole plateau on which the city stands today.
Castel della Pieve will be the new name attributed to the old Longobard castrum, now transformed into a military outpost from Perugia for its defensive needs towards Orvieto and Siena.
Of the four main gates, the Porta Perugina or San Francesco and that of the Castle were demolished in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Of the numerous fortifications built along the walls, in addition to the Tower of Casa Verri, the one known as the Bishop's remains, having been in the bishop's possession since 1572.
On the side facing the city there is a large ogival opening inside which there were wooden balconies and stairs for the use of war machines.

The Bishop's Tower, so called because it is present in the episcopal possessions and bordering the gardens of the Bishop's Palace, is one of the many fortifications built along the thirteenth-fourteenth century walls. Its design was entrusted to the brothers Ambrogio and Lorenzo Maltani, Sienese architects already involved in the construction of the Rocca Perugina.
