★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you happen to be in the vicinity of Merano in Alto-Adige, then you have to make the effort to go to Castelbello-Ciardes to Kuppelrain restaurant. This address is a must for any true lover of incredible food and wine, all of it local. We found the restaurant this morning on internet and discovered it at lunch on the first day of a road trip in Italy. Absolutely fantastic quality and superlative creativity - cacao pasta with local cheese sauce and black truffle - seriously? The whole family exudes talent. Father and son (21 years old) are Michelin star chefs and so is the mother, as the restaurant’s sommelier. One of the daughters is the chef pâtissier. Deserts were indescribably good. Excellent deep dive into wines from Alto-Agide, way beyond the big and well-known names, but with equal quality. It is getting harder and harder to surprise us, but I can tell you that this restaurant blew our socks off and we “just” had the bistro menu, as the gastronomic menu is only on offer in the evening. Added bonus - these are seriously nice people, the kind that you want to sit down with and talk with about food and wine for hours on end. Try it!
