I've been to Selva since I was born as my family owns an apartment there. I know this place very well.
I've walked past this hut many many times and often stopped for a drink or dessert. Never stopped here for lunch as it is the starting point for longer hikes.
As it started raining coming back from a day hike I stopped under their roof.
My Australian girlfriend went to the toilet and when she got back outside I saw the lady owner running after her and asking if she wanted to order anything.
My girfriend can't understand Italian and I pretended I couldn't understand either.
So the lady said "toilet, 50 cents".
The way she asked for it was as if my girlfriend had stolen something, and made her feel really uncomfortable in front of other patrons.
In Australia no one would ask for money to go to the toilet but I understand that now in Val Gardena this has become the normality.
Anyway I'm not complaining about the 50c but the way the lady chased my girlfriend almost running outside the hut and the abrupt way she asked for money.
I was actually thinking of getting a drink but of course I changed my mind.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Summer hikers should definitively spend a night in this lovely hut with great access to a variety of hikes. The clean, modern rooms and homemade meals included in the half-board make this a must stay for hikers!

The food is excellent. The father worked as a mountain guide, so don’t hesitate to ask him about your way. We stayed there in August 2021 and it was one of the best refugio in Alta Via 2
