P	Pato on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Frente a la Catedral de Santa Ágata hay dos o tres tiendas dedicadas a la venta de souvenirs locales muy “marinos”: pulseras de conchas, esponjas naturales marinas de gran tamaño (me compré una y es una maravilla), bajo platos de conchas, conchas decorativas, corales blancos, rojos pintados, colgantes con piezas de animales marítimos, etc. Está bien de precio y se puede negociar. Los corales merecen mucho la pena, y la esponja es compra obligada. In front of the Cathedral of Santa Ágata there are two or three stores dedicated to the sale of very “marine” local souvenirs: shell bracelets, large natural marine sponges (I bought one and it is wonderful), under shell dishes, shells decorative, white corals, painted red, pendants with pieces of sea animals, etc. It is well priced and negotiable. Corals are well worth it, and the sponge is a must buy.

In the very center of Gallipoli stands one of the most important churches of the city, both religiously and artistically: a solemn cathedral dedicated to Saint Agate, the construction of which began exactly in 1629, during the pompous baroque power. The cathedral settled in the same place where several centuries ago there was a medieval church of 12c, but already destroyed in the 17th century, having inherited the devotion to the Holy Martyr. In the cathedral are protected the relics of some saints, including St. Faust. In the past, believers could also dedicate their devotion to the most important relic of the city - the chest of Saint Agatha, which can now be seen in the basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in Galatina, where it was transported after the building was completed. The main beneficiary of the Gallipoli Cathedral was Dr. Giacomo Lazzari, who commissioned the construction of the church to local architects who commissioned the project of architect Giovanna Bernardino Jenuino. The main facade of the church, decorated with a Lechian stone, from the fact that it is similar to the architectural objects in Lecce, represents the decorative riches characteristic of the period when the works of the great sculptor architect Giuseppe Zimbalo (one of the main architects of Lecce) were valued in Salento.

Al suo interno grandi tele non affreschi essendo in un luogo di mare per ovvie ragione di conservazione temperatura e umidità naturalmente. In its interior large canvases do not frescoes being in a sea place for obvious reason of preserving temperature and humidity naturally.
