Un luogo dalla bellezza sconvolgente, levigato da secoli d'acqua e detriti. Il nome Gurna Nigra (pozza nera) deriva dal colore dell'acqua particolarmente scura. Il percorso è caratterizzato da strette gole e laghetti naturali. Si tratta di un ambiente molto dinamico: di anno in anno, a seconda della quantità d'acqua caduta nel periodo invernale, il paesaggio circostante muta profondamente. Questo aspetto influisce chiaramente sulla difficoltà di risalita dell'alveo. La prima parte del percorso è percorribile anche da escursionisti alle prime armi. Solo l'ultimo tratto richiede maggiore attenzione e preparazione fisica. Un tempo era possibile fare una parte del percorso utilizzando la "mastra" un canale di irrigazione costruito dai monaci dell'eremo. Il canale, in attività fino agli inizi degli anni duemila, costeggia il fianco destro delle colline adiacenti al fiume e dal paesino di Calatria arriva fino alla Presa dei Monaci ( in dialetto "prisa", ossia il punto da cui veniva prelevata l'acqua dal fiume). Danneggiato dalle violente alluvioni, il canale è stato abbandonato (ad oggi solo alcuni tratti sono percorribili). Raccomando a tutti coloro che volessero raggiungere questo posto meraviglioso di rivolgersi ad associazioni del luogo o escursionisti esperti. Il periodo migliore per la risalita è luglio quando la portata d'acqua risulta minima e le condizioni meteo sono stabili. Da evitare assolutamente le ultime settimane di agosto in quanto si verificano spesso improvvisi temporali nelle ore pomeridiane.

A place of unsettling beauty, smoothed by centuries of water and debris. The name Gurna Nigra (black pool) derives from the color of particularly dark water. The path is characterized by narrow gorges and natural ponds. It is a very dynamic environment: from year to year, depending on the amount of water fallen in the winter, the surrounding landscape changes profoundly. This aspect clearly influences the difficulty in ascending the riverbed. The first part of the route is also passable by novice hikers. Only the last part requires more attention and physical preparation. Once it was possible to make a part of the route using the "mastra" an irrigation canal built by the monks of the hermitage. The canal, in activity until the beginning of the 2000s, runs along the right flank of the hills adjacent to the river and from the village of Calatria to the Presa dei Monaci (in the dialect "prisa", ie the point from which water was taken from river). Damaged by the violent floods, the canal has been abandoned (to date only some stretches are passable). I recommend to all those who want to reach this wonderful place to turn to local associations or expert hikers. The best time for ascent is July when the water flow is minimal and the weather conditions are stable. Absolutely avoid the last weeks of August as they often occur sudden thunderstorms in the afternoon hours.
