Consiglio di contattare la Proloco locale per visitarlo quando è aperto e saranno presenti le guide volontarie che vi descriveranno il luogo. From the village of Mossano an easy and relaxing walk in the woods leads to this ancient hermitage rich in history and prehistory with a panoramic view of the valley below and the Euganean hills. I recommend contacting the local Tourist Office to visit it when it is open and there will be volunteer guides who will describe the place.

La grotta di San Bernardino, a Mossano (Vi), porta il nome del santo francescano perché questi operò a Vicenza nel 1423 e nel 1433. Bernardino si ritirava spesso in eremitaggio in questa grotta, che fu poi trasformata in un luogo di culto, come testimonia una Madonna col Bambino scavata nella parete. La santità del luogo non valse però nulla contro l’eccidio che vi si consumò nel 1510, al tempo della Lega di Cambrai. Quell’anno gli imperiali avevano assalito Vicenza, dirigendosi poi a Mossano. La popolazione locale e quella delle ville vicine si rifugiò nella grotta e vi si barricò. Gli assedianti, fatto un mucchio di frasche, sterpi, legna e paglia vi appiccarono il fuoco, aggiungendovi dello zolfo. Fu un eccidio: 1200 tra uomini, donne e bambini morirono soffocati dal fumo. Sopravvissero solo un giovane e due ragazzine. Nella grotta, infine, si trovano le più antiche testimonianze preistoriche del vicentino, portando segni di uomini del Paleolitico, e avendo ospitato l’uomo di Neanderthal. A	Alberto on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Percorso stupendo per arrivarci, giovani maleducati all'arrivo: eravamo in passeggiata e raggiunta la grotta abbiamo trovato un numeroso gruppo di giovani vestiti a tema biblico che filmavano chissà che cosa. Tra cui alcuni che stavano urinando fissando il panorama. Siamo stati accolti da risate ed occhiatacce come se li stessimo disturbando. Tornando indietro abbiamo trovato molti altri passeggiatori amareggiati. Agli inizi di maggio, nel tratto vicino alla grotta è possibile vedere la fioritura di alcune orchidee spontanee, in particolare l'anacamptis pyramidalis, che spunta proprio lungo il percorso. La grotta però non è visitabile e si può vedere solo l'entrata, rimanendo al di là della recinzione. However, the cave cannot be visited and only the entrance can be seen, remaining beyond the fence.
