Sono sorti villaggi con case-grotta, oggi quasi completamente abbandonati, e sono state scavate chiese rupestri con interessanti affreschi in stile bizantino. Per visitarle in sicurezza ed avere accesso in particolare alle chiese rupestri occorre contattare l'ufficio turistico o guide locali. Molto articolata è l'offerta dal punto di vista artistico-culturale, in particolare nei comuni di Mottola e Massafra
