A ISCHIA,TANTI ANNI FA… Così la famiglia del capo del fascismo trovò un po’ di pace dopo una tragica stagione Arrivarono a Forio temendo di incontrare l'ostilità della gente. Ma i timori svanirono subito, davanti alla simpatia con cui furono accolti dalla popolazione. Si stabilì un rapporto duraturo di amicizia. Quando, nel '75, donna Rachele tornò nei luoghi dell'esilio, fu accolta da una folla in festa SALVATORE GRILLO IN una tarda mattinata calda e luminosa di fine luglio 1945, un motobarcone a motore, proveniente dal porto di Ischia, s'affianca al piccolo molo del porticciolo di Forio. Da esso sbarcano una donna di mezza età, un giovane diciottenne ed una fanciulla sedicenne. Pochi curiosi assistono allo sbarco, e quasi nessuno riconosce i tre personaggi. Li accompagnano alcuni «funzionari» che, dopo aver provveduto alla raccolta ed al trasporto dei bagagli, li avviano ed accompagnano verso un'abitazione non lontana dal molo stesso. Si tratta della «metà» della famiglia di Benito Mussolini: la moglie Rachele e due dei suoi cinque figli, Romano ed Annamaria. (Bruno era perito in un incidente aereo, Edda era già stata inviata al confino a Lipari, nelle Eolie, Vittorio li raggiungerà qualche mese dopo). Il confino fu deciso dal governo provvisorio italiano mentre erano prigionieri degli angloamericani a Terni, in un campo di concentramento per internati civili. Verso la metà del mese di luglio furono informati che sarebbero stati «trasferiti» in un'isola, senza precisare quale. «Noi pensammo ‑ ricorda Romano ‑ che saremmo stati portati a Ponza, a Ustica o nelle Isole Eolie. Fortunatamente fu scelta l'isola d'Ischia, e per residenza Forio, uno dei sei comuni dell'Isola». L’appartamento, di proprietà della famiglia Covatta, era stato designato dal ministero degli Interni. Un'abitazione modesta (ingresso, tre camere e cucina ammobiliate), pulita ed imbiancata di fresco, era ubicata all'ultimo piano di un palazzotto di stile arabesco, tipico delle costruzioni delle nostre isole, ancora noto come «Casa Castaldi», con ampia e bellissima vista panoramica, particolarmente dalla parte che s'affaccia sul porticciolo. II palazzo è adiacente al «Torrione», vero e proprio simbolo di Forio, una costruzione a pianta circolare che domina il centro storico ed è visibile a trecentosessanta gradi Tra le poche cose care che Romano s'era potuto portare appresso v'era la sua fisarmonica, che egli aveva imparato a suonare da ragazzo come ogni buon romagnolo che si rispetti. «Fin da bambino ‑ ricorda ‑ ho nutrito una gran passione per la musica, in particolare per quella jazz. Me n'ero letteralmente innamorato ascoltando una serie di dischi dei grandi maestri americani, che mio fratello Vittorio m'aveva portato da un suo viaggio negli Stati Uniti, prima dello scoppio della guerra. Entrando in quella casa notai, con mia gran sorpresa e gioia, la presenza di un bel pianoforte in buone condizioni. Non molto tempo dopo che ci eravamo sistemati, lo feci accordare e incominciai a suonarlo, esercitandomi per ore. L’incontro con quel pianoforte fu il primo scalino del mio salire verso la futura vita di pianista». I timori e le ansie dei tre personaggi di non essere bene accolti svanirono subito, anche se per parecchi giorni non uscirono da casa. Ma il paese è piccolo, e la gente mormora... Ben presto i foriani apprendono, sempre più numerosi, della loro presenza e, non smentendo la proverbiale generosità ed ospitalità che li distingue, si fanno loro incontro.
