Realizzata intorno al 1250 da Giacomo D’Andrea e Gemini di Maestro Francesco, conosciamo i nomi dei costruttori perché sono incisi sul fusto centrale “Iacobus Andree et Gemini magistri Francisci fecerunt hoc opus, risulta in posizione decentrata rispetto al centro della piazza. La sua costruzione, secondo le testimonianze storiche, fu finanziata dagli abitanti della contrada, al fine di avere a disposizione una fontana dove attingere acqua per l’uso domestico.
Nonostante le decorazioni e la meravigliosa forma a fuso, tipica di questi luoghi, la fontana in peperino è stata per moltissimi anni utilizzata dai cittadini, e non aveva quindi una funzione puramente decorativa. In bella mostra, come in ogni altro monumento storico di Viterbo, ritroviamo i leoni, simboli e custodi della città.
Una volta giunti di fronte alla fontana non limitatevi solamente ad osservarla dall’esterno, piuttosto avvicinatevi e guardate all’interno. Sul fondo della vasca troverete quattro cubi di peperino sui quali, in passato, venivano appoggiati i recipienti per prendere l’acqua.
Same as many others but with the particularity of its birth, financed by the people. Made around 1250 by Giacomo D’Andrea and Gemini di Maestro Francesco, we know the names of the builders because they are engraved on the central shaft "Iacobus Andree et Gemini magistri Francisci fecerunt hoc opus, is in a decentralized position with respect to the center of the square. According to historical evidence, its construction was financed by the inhabitants of the district, in order to have a fountain available to draw water for domestic use.
Despite the decorations and the wonderful spindle shape, typical of these places, the peperino fountain was used by the citizens for many years, and therefore did not have a purely decorative function. On display, as in any other historical monument of Viterbo, we find the lions, symbols and guardians of the city.
Once in front of the fountain, do not limit yourself only to observing it from the outside, rather approach it and look inside. At the bottom of the tank you will find four cubes of peperino on which, in the past, containers were placed to take water.
