La Fontana delle Sette Cannelle, di età etrusco romana, la più antica, ha avuto un ruolo importante per la vita e la crescita di Tuscania. Si trova nella parte più bassa del paese a due passi dall'antica via Clodia, strada commerciale e non militare, voluta dai romani per gli approvvigionamenti della capitale. Immaginate allora quale via vai di gente ci fosse intorno a questa fonte perché unica in un raggio di chilometri. Pellegrini in viaggio, soldati, mercanti con i carri e le loro merci trainati da animali e soprattutto gli abitanti del paese che venivano qui a rifornirsi di acqua potabile da usare nelle loro case. Un po' come noi oggi quando ci fermiamo sulle autostrade per fare rifornimento di benzina. Verso la fine del 1300 capirono l'importanza di questo crocevia così sulla piazza decisero di fare il mercato.
