This is the first station where you can get on FCE train to go back to the past and travel around Etna.

Would definitely recommend to anybody, if your sensitive to noise either sit in the more modern wagon, or bring some kind of ear plugs or headphones... It's a nice experience :)

Wonderful 3 hour trip around Etna Park. Not quite 360⁰. Ticket €7. Scenery changes as you travel. Etna in the background changing as the train goes round to different aspects. Green, little towns where kids got off. Use it as local train for school. (Wondered why they were not bothered with view). I was like a dog looking out of a car window. Passed wineries, lava fields that were a cliched moonscape, valleys with sprawling houses on hills, eventually turning into a metro that went underground and passed through builtup areas. At one point I was the only person on the single carriage. Changed trains at the highest point, and continued downwards, twisting tracks turning left and right. Well worth the trouble. You can stop off at the towns and explore.

Take the old one. No airco. No comfortable seats. Noisy as hell. But it’s lovely! Ride it to Randozza, continue the circle or go back. You’ll see the Etna from the other side and a lot of countryside. Hang out the windows, meet some locals, it’s a great ride. The whole 2+ hour ride plus 2 hour return costs around 6-7€ and children go free. Loved it. But need to take a shower. Tips: bring water/food, there is a toilet on board, bring some paper towels. Parking was easy near the station, for free (as far as I could tell). Friendly staff.

This sometimes slow train is relaxing way to take in the varied and stunning scenery wrapped around Mt. Etna. You may need to visit the train station in advance of your trip to get the timetable. It is possible to make a roundtrip from Catania in one day, changing trains in Randazzo and catching the express back to Catania from Riposto.
