★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was pickpocketed on this station on 30/04/2018. The train was terribly crowded, we were the last to get on. A guy jumped on the train and pushed hard on us, clearly to mask his effort to steal my wallet from my pocket. Then just a second before the doors closed, he got off. Staff did not bother to check CCTV or even to make a note, likely just usual business. Avoid if you can. Ruins are great - this is about the station.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Good station, there is a ticket vendor here. Ie, a person. It costs €2.20 one way and to Naples.
You have to put your ticket through the machine when you arrive at this station (to get out) so make sure you buy a ticket at your departure station. Not all stations have ticket machines.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stop here to visit Vesuvius summit.
As you exit the station down the steps onto the street, turn immediately left and you will see ahead of you 'Vesuvio Espress'. For €20 you can buy a return ticket to the beginning of the final hike to the summit, including the €10 park entry fee (so that's €10 for the return coach ticket plus €10 park entry). Great value.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Get off here to catch the bus up Mt Vesuvius. It's right outside the station, charging €20 for both bus and entrance to the crater.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ So this is the train station you want to stop at when visiting Herculaneum ruins. Don't use the fake ticket office on the left when leaving the station. Take a right, then left down the main road toward the ruins. Be sure to buy drinks or grab a coffee as the site has vending machines and nothing else...
