Elephants are great. Obelisks are too. But this is probably the best elephant and obelisk you will see together in your lifetime. Do not miss.

Lovely place, the obelisk and the area around. I wanted to paint the elephant with red painting and write beside it (The Red Elephant) who's know then it will be a great advertising for my company :)) but unfortunately my wife is refused :(

If you are on the way to the Pantheon, it is easy to see, it is worth taking a look and taking a picture of it. But if you're not in the area, better not. It is not worth living just for him. It is an Egyptian Obelisk in a charming market, but only that. ???

The Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is very beautiful. If I am not wrong it was built on the temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. In this church you will find the statue of Christ depicted as he is resurrected and his hold the cross, staff and a rope in his hand, which was made by Michael angelo. It's a church worth visiting.

Definitely worth a look. Odd bit of history behind this fascinating sculpture, which decorates a small and plain piazza in front of Basilica S. Maria sopra Minerva. Story says the artist Bernini wanted for decades to use this theme (elephant with small Egyptian obelisk, found on the site, riding on its back) and finally got his chance. Another story says Bernini wanted the rear end of the elephant mooning the building behind, where Gallileo was made to recant.

Bernini’s Elephant and Obelisk is a beautiful marble sculpture just down the street from the Pantheon. It houses one of the smaller Egyptian obelisks in Rome, but that doesn’t diminish its captivating beauty. Get up close and examine the multiple colors of the elephant and it’s fixtures. On the weekends you can usually catch excellent street performers (violin, etc.) who set up near the sculpture.

The obelisk (found in the garden of the monastery of Santa Maria sopra Minerva) with the cross on the top and Bernini's elephant - all together. A little bit strange combination but who cares, the elephant is very cute.

Beautiful Egyptian obelisk in an elephant sculpture by Bernini. Right near the Pantheon.
