Historic convent with more than 400 years devoted friars and a warm family atmosphere

In Piazza S. Francesco d'Assisi we find the Convent of the Friars Minor, founded in 1609 and completed in 1630. Both the facade and the interior of the church are in Baroque style, appreciable for the soft colors and the lightness of the stuccos that enrich the altars and the vault with the majestic figure of St. Michael the Archangel. It has a lowered Romanesque arched vault resting on side walls and alternating on the base lines, with sails decorated with bas-reliefs and stuccos. Beautiful example of Baroque architecture, it has a portal with "broken tympanum and urn gable" and bears the noble coat of arms of the Borghese family (eagle and dragon). The convent and the church were built by everyone and was consecrated on February 6, 1630, as written in Latin on the left side of the entrance. It has a single nave with seven altars: the largest, dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli with the image on the canvas of the seventeenth century. Exposed in the upper part of the central wall. The side altars are covered with polychrome marble and medallions in white marble with the configuration of the altar holder. The right ones are dedicated to S. Pasquale, S. Diego, S.Antonio, while the left ones starting from the main altar, are dedicated to: S. Francesco, to the Holy Crucifix and to S. Nicola. 4 other wooden statues are found in the sacristy: S.Chiara, the Virgin of Purification, Ss. Pietro and e S. Matteo. A detail: the crucifix placed on the hand of S.Diego bears the date 1624 finally a curiosity the Angels that adorn the church are 143 of which 96 carved in plaster, 24 in marble, 6 in wood and 17 paintings on canvas. The church underwent its last restoration in 1982 and was blessed on August 2, 1983. The bells were also cast and blessed for the occasion. It is a church to visit.

The little church is spectacular, beautiful, elegant and well kept. The church is full of stuccoes and the marble altars are beautiful. Too bad for the total absence of heating (Sunday morning Mass with icy Baptism) and a choir (not like the improvised one that morning). The elderly friar who celebrated was nice, even if at least 3-4 times he did not finish the thought.

Very nice convent, cozy church. It is celebrated in the convent of Sant'Antonio, a very revered saint. A church that my wife and I chose to get married to.
