★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nel 1546 Monastero e Cattedrale cedettero il posto per la costruzione di una fortezza, che prese appunto il nome di Forte San Salvatore e furono riedificati sulla spianata che oggi è occupata dal Museo Nazionale, presso il torrente Annunziata.

La chiesa è stata affidata al clero della diocesi di messina ed stata adibita per un breve periodo a cattedrale dopo l'incendio che nel 1943 dannegio'il duomo di messina dedicato a Maria assunta
