Nell’età romana il municipium di Atena, in cui erano presenti i templi di Giove, Cibele ed Esculapio, era più importante rispetto a Padula e Teggiano, come confermato sia da Plinio il Vecchio che da Marco Tullio Cicerone.
The discovery of megalithic walls suggests that Atena Lucana was already inhabited before the 4th century BC, confirming that it is the oldest town in Vallo di Diano.
In Roman times, the municipium of Athena, where the temples of Jupiter, Cybele and Aesculapius were present, was more important than Padula and Teggiano, as confirmed by both Pliny the Elder and Marco Tullio Cicero.

Da assaggiare il pane fatto col "criscito" durante la manifestazione "la terra ti tiene",dove i panificatori del posto aprono i forni antichi e danno vita a questo indispensabile e meraviglioso nutrimento
