The Municipality of San Rufo is mostly mountainous, located on the road towards the Passo della Sentinella which connects the Vallo di Diano with the Calore Salernitano Valley and with Paestum. The town is located in a piedmont area between hills covered with vineyards and olive groves sloping towards the plain of the tanagro. The town was built in the 13th century by Gubello Pellegrino, but its origins are probably older. In the localities of Campanella, San Marzano and Casalvetere, remains from the Roman era have been found. A place of great environmental interest is represented by the town of Calvanello, easily accessible, where you can admire the evocative ruins of the medieval castle destroyed in the fifteenth century. Well preserved are the local traditions linked above all to religious events such as the feast of the "Madonna della Tempa" during which the typically artistically decorated "Cinti" of wax are carried in procession. S. Rufo hosts the Meridonale Sports Center, one of the largest and best equipped in the South. The country, which in ancient times was part of the State of Diano, is located at a high altitude compared to the neighboring countries. The first document proving the existence of the farmhouse is the parchment preserved in the Carrano di Teggiano archive from which it appears that in 1293 the count Tommaso Sanseverino assigned the suffeudo of the Policeta (the ancient town) to the soldier Giovanni Pellegrini, residing in Diano . Probably the house, however, already existed in the X century together with its church and, at the time of the description of the parchment, the house had to be already consolidated for some time. This hypothesis is also confirmed by the fact that San Rufo is located on the ancient Roman road that led from Vallo di Diano to Paestum. In fact, at the foot of the village, testimonies have been discovered referring to a Roman pagus dependent on Tegianum (today's Teggiano). Other scholars place the foundation of the farmhouse at the end of the 13th century, in honor of the bishop of Capua Rufo, by Gubello Pellegrino. Beginning in the 13th century, the settlement became a hamlet in the state of Diano and suffeudo of the Pellegrino family until the 17th century, first passing to the Rinaldi family and finally to the Laviano family. In the following centuries, after the subversion of feudalism, the town followed the fate common to the other towns of the Vallo di Diano and some of its citizens swelled the ranks of bandits in the area in the struggle against the distracted work of the new Savoy rulers in the South. In the eighteenth century the town became known for the production of musical instruments. Di San Rufo is also the famous scholar Paolo Eterni who described the Vallo di Diano in the seventeenth century.

San Rufo is located at an altitude of 640 meters above sea level. It is located between two mountains: Spina dell'Ausino and Cucuzzo delle Puglie. Between them opens the Sentinella pass, which has always connected the Vallo di Diano with the Valle del Calore Salernitano. It is one of the Salerno municipalities whose inhabited center is located in a valley at a relatively high altitude (655 m) south-east of the Alburni massif, between the Spina dell'Ausino mountains (1441 m) and the Cucuzzo delle Puglie (1440 ), at the Passo della Sentinella (956 m), all very interesting places for hikers. Built in the thirteenth century and built in honor of San Rufo, but of the town's artistic heritage only some interesting buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries with stone portals remain, in addition to the ruins of the ancient castle.
