A special place that was the study, the library, but above all the place where Clarence Bicknell gathered the greatest botanical and archeology scholars of his contemporaneity to study and discuss, to live, in a modern and very innovative way for the time , discovery and scientific research.

The Clarence Bicknell library museum, founded in 1888, is proof of how much the British loved the Riviera and especially Bordighera. Bicknell was an English botanist, archaeologist and painter who lived for a long time in Bordighera. The Ficus macrophylla of the Bicknell museum is the oldest of the three specimens located in Bordighera and is included in the national list of monumental trees.

A time machine: Clarence Bicknell created this museum with all the latest ideas on science and culture of his long-gone age. Could he have imagined that his creation is still going strong in the 2020's? The building, the collections, the whole atmosphere are worth the visit. Not just for Bicknell's undoubted scientific achievements, in botany and palaeontology, but also for the rΓ΄le played by a certain class of British expats in the development of the Riviera, including social policy and large scale charity. The visit is much enriched by a staff which is not only well informed but also enthusiastic and helpful. They made the experience special. A great 'little' museum. Well worth the visit.
