Il nome del paese deriverebbe da Tascio Cecilio Cipriano, santo martire cristiano. Il primo documento in cui si ha notizia di una chiesa dedicata a tale San Cipriano, voluta dal principe Guaimaro V, risale al 1049. La chiesa era situata in un luogo detto Venera, Vernera o Benera, che da allora si chiamò San Cipriano, divenendo un territorio concesso negli anni a feudatari ecclesiastici e laici.

The name of the town derives from Tascio Cecilio Cipriano, a holy Christian martyr. The first document in which there is news of a church dedicated to this San Cipriano, commissioned by Prince Guaimaro V, dates back to 1049. The church was located in a place called Venera, Vernera or Benera, which since then was called San Cipriano, becoming a territory granted over the years to ecclesiastical and lay feudal lords.
