The cistern is really interesting, and given the heat of these days, it is a relief to enter it. Too bad for maintenance, which deserves to be a little more accurate. As of the same Etruscan remains, which are adjacent, and would need to be kept better, and for which you pay a single ticket together with the cistern.

A fantastic example of Roman public architecture, this cistern collected water for the inhabitants of the acropolis. Beautiful plays of light that are created on the water. Entrance included in the Volterra Card.

Skvěle to římané postavili.
On a hot summer day, this place is like air conditioning. Water reservoir and for me the most impressive Volterra monument. The Romans built it great.

Going down a pretty narrow spiral staircase, but it's already fun. Then down in the heat of August this place is cool and cozy. Below you will find a pillar hall that once contained the city's water. Now there is a small pool to mark what used to be here. A short and nice visit to your lovely town.

Carina, molto ben conservata.
Pretty, very well preserved. The anti Covid rules are very well respected

Unexpectedly fun trip underground. Very tasty with 35 degrees. Especially the beautiful (narrow) spiral staircase is worthwhile. No idea how busy it normally is, but now the waiting time was about 5 minutes. Downstairs it was very quiet and we could take all the time to take pictures.

With a single entry ticket it is possible to access both the Etruscan site and this Roman cistern. Strategically located it seems to serve the surrounding area of water. In fact, the dimensions are considerable. Being hypogean, one descends (due to covid), in a few and conjoined ones, from a truly tiny spiral staircase clearly empty to evergreen only dripping rainwater. It deserves more attention and maintenance as well as the site next door.
