K	Kaffenback on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La costruzione della chiesa del Carmine risale alla seconda metà del XVII secolo, in seguito all'insediamento in città, nel 1618, dei Carmelitani. Fu riedificata tra il 1720 e il 1724a causa del crollo verificatosi nel 1719. I locali del convento, soppresso nel 1809, vennero destinati ad accogliere l'ospedale civile. La facciata, che si innalza su tre ordini e si conclude con un timpano spezzato, è ricca di decorazioni barocche ed è movimentata da nicchie con le statue di sant'Elia, di sant'Eliseo, di santa Teresa d'Avila e di santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi. Il portone ligneo del 1745 è opera d'intaglio del maestro galatinese Donato Costantino. L'interno, a navata unica rettangolare con quattro cappelle laterali, possiede una copertura decorata con finti cassettoni e con un affresco del gallipolino Agesilao Flora, del 1915. La chiesa è caratterizzata dall'imponente macchina settecentesca dell'altare maggiore con tela della Madonna del Carmine, al centro, le statue policrome del profeta Elia e di san Giuseppe a sinistra, e quelle di san Giovanni Battista e di sant'Angelo martire a destra. A destra dell'altare maggiore è il settecentesco altare della Natività del Signore, realizzato da Mauro Manieri intorno al 1736 e sovrastato da un organo a canne. È inoltre presente un presepe in pietra leccese del 1650. Nel 1998 Io e mia moglie abbiamo avuto la fortuna di sposarci in questa chiesa che dall'estero può sembrare anonima ma una volta entrati si rivela agli occhi come un tesoro splendente che rende uniche tutte le foto del matrimonio. Essendo gettonatissima, bisogna prenotare almeno un anno prima la propria cerimonia.
