Quello che oggi vi voglio raccontare è la storia legata al campanile che fu commissionato da Raimondo Orsini del Balzo nel 1397. Questa fu decorata da figure umane e bestiali, intagli arabeschi, capitelli e ghirigori scolpiti nella bianca pietra leccese. La leggenda narra che la torre fu costruita in una sola notte di tempesta da dei demoni evocati dal mago ed alchimista Matteo Tafuri esperto anche di esoterismo e occultismo. L'intento era quello di stupire il mondo con un'opera maestosa. Il Tafuri lanciato l'incantesimo, stabilì che l'intera opera doveva essere terminata prima dell'alba e tutti i demoni, spiriti e streghe arruolate per l'edificazione dovevano fuggire via prima che il gallo iniziasse a cantare. Purtroppo nella frenesia della costruzione, al sopraggiungimento dell'alba ed al primo canto, alcuni demoni minori furono colti di sorpresa e si ritrovarono irrimediabilmente pietrificati nel posto in cui i primi raggi di sole li colpirono. Oggi è possibile ammirare questi demoni sulla sommità della torre a completare l'addobbo artistico forse in attesa del momento in cui un'incantesimo contro li liberi così che, possono ritornare alla vita. La ricostruzione ebbe inizio nel 1783 ed fu ultimata nel 1836, ben 53 anni dopo. Molto bella sia la chiesa che la Guglia alta 40 metri e completata nel 1397, ossia circa 400 anni prima dell'inizio della ricostruzione. Consigliata una visita. The current Mother Church of Maria Santissima Assunta was rebuilt on an ancient church. The reconstruction began in 1783 and was completed in 1836, 53 years later. Very beautiful both the church and the spire 40 meters high and completed in 1397, that is about 400 years before the beginning of the reconstruction. A visit recommended.
