I lavori di costruzione iniziarono nel luglio del 1860 e terminarono 12 anni dopo. La chiesa si presenta a pianta a croce a navata unica, ha la facciata in stile neoclassica ed una cupola recentemente ristrutturata e rivestita con piastrelle in maiolica. LA LEGGENDA DEL MIRACOLO DEL SANTO: Si narra che, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale il paese di San Pancrazio Salentino subì delle incursioni da parte degli aerei Alleati a causa del vicino Aeroporto militare. Il più pesante attacco avvenne il 2 luglio 1943 che avrebbe potuto registrare gravi danni se non si fosse verificato un avvenimento “miracoloso”. Quel giorno un soldato italiano, attraversando la piazza del paese, notò un ragazzino davanti al portone della Chiesa Madre che apriva e chiudeva le braccia verso il cielo. Il soldato preoccupato per il ragazzo lo esortò più volte a ripararsi in chiesa, ma le sue parole non furono ascoltate e visto che il paese era sotto attacco ripresa la via per l’aeroporto. Terminato il bombardamento, il militare prese la decisione di ritornare indietro e assicurarsi di ciò che ne era stato del giovane. Entrato in chiesa non lo trovò, alzò gli occhi verso l’altare del santo Patrono e riconobbe nella statua le sembianze del ragazzo che aveva visto vicino al portone della Matrice. In pochi istanti nel paese si gridò al Miracolo! San Pancrazio aveva allontanato dal paese le bombe lanciate dagli alleati. Located in the center of the village in front of the town hall, it is dedicated to the patron saint Pancrazio and Francesco d'Assisi. Construction work began in July 1860 and ended 12 years later. The church has a cross plan with a single nave, has a neoclassical facade and a recently renovated dome covered with majolica tiles. THE LEGEND OF THE MIRACLE OF THE HOLY: It is said that during the Second World War the town of San Pancrazio Salentino suffered incursions by Allied planes due to the nearby military airport. The heaviest attack took place on July 2, 1943 which could have been seriously damaged if a "miraculous" event had not occurred. That day an Italian soldier, crossing the town square, noticed a boy in front of the door of the Mother Church that opened and closed his arms towards the sky. The soldier worried about the boy urged him several times to take shelter in the church, but his words were not heeded and since the country was under attack, the way to the airport was resumed. After the bombing, the military made the decision to go back and make sure of what had become of the young man. Entering the church he did not find him, he looked up at the altar of the patron saint and recognized the appearance of the boy in the statue as he had seen near the door of the Matrix. In a few moments in the country there was a shout at the Miracle! San Pancrazio had removed from the country the bombs thrown by the allies.

Bella la facciata neoclassica della Chiesa Matrice dedicata ai Santi Pancrazio Martire e Francesco d'Assisi, edificata nel 1866-69. L'Altare Maggiore cattura l'attenzione quando si entra in questa Chiesa, la quale presenta statue in cartapesta, tele e arredi sacri! L'altare è un'opera del noto scultore marmorario napoletano Aniello Gentile. Located in the main square of San Pancrazio Salentino! Beautiful neoclassical facade of the Mother Church dedicated to the Saints Pancrazio Martyr and Francis of Assisi, built in 1866-69. The High Altar captures attention when one enters this Church, which has papier-mâché statues, canvases and sacred furnishings! The altar is a work of the famous Neapolitan marble sculptor Aniello Gentile.

It is a church that needs some work as nothing has been done since it was built, which is a real shame, it is a beautiful church with excellent acoustics.
