R	Rino Noto on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Alcune leggende narrano che la chiesa fu, nei primi secoli del Cristianesimo, la prima sede vescovile lilibetana, altre che fu edificata nell’anno mille. Dai risultati di alcuni scavi archeologici sembrerebbe piuttosto che la chiesa sia stata edificata su un tempio pagano dedicato a Nettuno, dio del mare. Le più antiche testimonianze sulla Chiesa di San Matteo di Marsala sono databili ai primi del XIV secolo, grazie anche all'incisione al centro della cupola della data del 1330, anno della sua presumibile costruzione. Entrando attraverso un portale architravato, si accede ad un portico interno ove due colonne monolitiche sostengono il coretto sul quale è collocato l’organo dei primi del ‘700 costruito da Giacomo Andronico. Una elegante acquasantiera del 1593, opera di Michele Paci, si trova nell’ingresso. L’altare maggiore in legno e vetro è della fine del ‘700. Nei quattro vani della cupola, molto semplice e bassa, il pittore Giuseppe Bruno nel 1876 ha rappresentato i quattro continenti attraverso immagini allegoriche di donne: l’Africa, che offre un arbusto a un cammello, l’Europa, che regge nella mano sinistra un modello di chiesa, l’America, insieme a un giovane olivatsro che prende una freccia dalla faretra e l’Asia, seduta su un elefante. Sulla volta a botte della navata è raffigurato San Matteo mentre contempla la Vergine Maria. Una curiosità: San Matteo è protettore delle Guardie di Finanza, dei Doganieri e di quanti operano nel settore tributario. Some legends tell that the church was, in the first centuries of Christianity, the first Lilliputian bishopric, others that was built in the year 1000. From the results of some archaeological excavations it would seem that the church was built on a pagan temple dedicated to Neptune, god of the sea. The oldest evidence of the Church of San Matteo in Marsala can be dated to the early 14th century, thanks also to the engraving in the center of the dome dating back to 1330, the year of its presumed construction. Entering through an architraved portal, you access an internal portico where two monolithic columns support the coretto on which the organ of the early '700 built by Giacomo Andronico is placed. An elegant font from 1593, by Michele Paci, is located in the entrance. The high altar in wood and glass is from the end of the 18th century. In the four rooms of the dome, very simple and low, the painter Giuseppe Bruno in 1876 represented the four continents through allegorical images of women: Africa, which offers a shrub to a camel, Europe, which holds in its left hand a church model, America, together with a young olivatsro who takes an arrow from the quiver and Asia, sitting on an elephant. On the barrel vault of the nave San Matteo is depicted contemplating the Virgin Mary. A curiosity: San Matteo is protector of the Finance Guards, Customs officers and those who work in the tax sector.
