It is a very beautiful church. There are books and places where the names of the victims of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake are written. The cathedral was built for victims of the 1703 earthquake.

In this church it is striking the chapel dedicated to the Madonna in which there is a huge book with all the photos of the victims of the L'Aquila earthquake.

ENGLISH: Located in Piazza del Duomo, the nerve center of the town of L'Aquila and also of tourism, the site of various events, the first stone dates back to 1713 in memory of the victims of the 1703 earthquake and, to this day, represents the symbol of that reconstruction of the city post earthquake and the main example of the religious architecture of the city. Of clear Baroque architecture, unknown at the time by the citizens of L'Aquila but very famous in the capital, based on a project by Carlo Buratti (pupil of Carlo Fontana, baptismal font of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, etc.) it was completed in 1726 even if the internal decorations continued in the following years. Then there was the construction of the particular facade (1769-85, Leomporri) and finally, in 1803, the construction of the dome by Valadier, very active in Rome. The terrible earthquake of April 6, 2009 largely destroyed the dome itself, lesions on the façade and on the load-bearing walls, with the church floors that suffered numerous cracks and disruptions due to the collapses from above. After 4 years of work, the dome was entirely rebuilt following the style of the drum and the previous dome. A true masterpiece for the symbol of the city.

The church is of great importance for the city which, once again, in 2009, was injured by the terrible earthquake that struck it. It was built in 1713 in memory of the victims of the earthquake that occurred ten years earlier with the aim of celebrating masses for the dead. The project is due to the architect Carlo Buratti, who introduced characters of linearity and classic elegance. Perfectly restored after the damages and the almost complete collapse of the dome, it is the place of memory and the symbol of the damage caused by the earthquake to the Abruzzo artistic heritage. The imposing façade, the only baroque example present in the city, is characterized by broken curved lines and by the alternation of concave and convex spaces. The central medallion depicting the Virgin of Suffrage, the entrance portal with the representation of the skeleton and the statues of San Sisto and San Gregorio were later made. The cylindrical dome is significant, perfectly reconstructed and attributed to the architect Valadier, for its precious decorations.
