Il quartiere, così chiamato perché abitato da coloro i quali furono colpiti dalla peste, era popolato da pescatori, artigiani e commercianti costituendo l’antico centro economico della città di Acireale e del piccolo borgo marinaro di S. Maria La Scala.
The church of S. Maria del Suffragio stands in the "District of the Dead". The district, so called because inhabited by those who were affected by the plague, was populated by fishermen, artisans and traders constituting the ancient economic center of the city of Acireale and the small fishing village of S. Maria La Scala.
