★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La piccola cripta di Sant’Elia, ormai
quasi ridotta a rudere, tramanda
una planimetria a due navate ab-
sidate, suddivise da pilastrini ed ar-
chivolti, che evidenzia molte ana-
logie con la cripta di Santa Maria
di Olivares nella Murgia di Matera.
La copertura è ormai caduta e nel-
le absidi sono scomparsi gli affre-
schi che dovevano ricoprire an-
che parte delle murature laterali.
Un’epigrafe in latino, che individua
l’immagine del Santo, attesta l’av-
venuta occidentalizzazione del
culto di Sant’Elia, di origine greca,
in un contesto storico e sociale nel
quale il monachesimo benedettino
è saldamente radicato fin dagli
inizi del X secolo.
