Eretto nel 1130 subì, nel tempo, diversi rimaneggiamenti e assunse il titolo di Cattedrale in quanto sede periferica della cattedra dell'Archimandrita di Messina. All'interno è possibile ammirare opere databili a partire dal XV sec. tra i quali spicca il pulpito ligneo di età barocca e gli affreschi dell'abside dell'altare maggiore. La chiesa è famosa in quanto nella sua cripta venivano eseguiti i passaggi più importanti della mummificazione dei corpi di nobili e prelati che poi venivano deposti presso la cripta della Chiesa del Convento dei Cappuccini. The church is famous because in its crypt the most important steps of the mummification of the bodies of nobles and prelates were carried out, which were then deposited in the crypt of the Church of the Capuchin Convent.
