★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La chiesa è annessa all'ex monastero dei Frati Minori Osservanti, ora museo archeologico. Il monastero fu fatto edificare dal conte di Ugento Angilberto del Balzo intorno al 1473 e fu intitolato a Santa Maria della Pietà[1]. In seguito alla confisca dei beni ecclesiastici nel 1861 in concomitanza dell'annessione del Regno delle due Sicilie al Regno d'Italia, il monastero divenne proprietà comunale ad opera dei nuovi amministratori Comunali di stampo liberal-borghese, e la chiesa rimase per lungo tempo chiusa al culto. Al causa di tali confische, il Vescovo di Ugento Mons. Francesco Bruni, protestò con una lettera al Ministro della Giustizia Giovanni Battista Cassinis del neonato Regno d'Italia. Il Vescovo fu arrestato e allontanato a Lecce, e la sede vescovile di Ugento rimase vacante per undici anni. La Chiesa fu riaperta con la costituzione della Confraternita della Madonna Addolorata.
 The church is annexed to the former monastery of the Observant Friars, now an archaeological museum. The monastery was built by the Count of Ugento Angilberto del Balzo around 1473 and was dedicated to Santa Maria della Pietà [1]. Following the confiscation of ecclesiastical goods in 1861 in conjunction with the annexation of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies to the Kingdom of Italy, the monastery became municipal property by the new liberal-bourgeois municipal administrators, and the church remained closed for a long time to worship. To the cause of these confiscations, the Bishop of Ugento Mons. Francesco Bruni protested with a letter to the Minister of Justice Giovanni Battista Cassinis of the newborn Kingdom of Italy. The Bishop was arrested and removed to Lecce, and the bishopric of Ugento remained vacant for eleven years. The church was reopened with the establishment of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows.
