★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La chiesa di San Nicolò l'Arena, sito in Piazza Dante,misura 105 metri di lunghezza e di larghezza 48 metri,con un'altezza massima di circa 66 metri alla cupola, è l'edificio di culto cattolico più grande e alto di Sicilia, con il punto d'osservazione panoramico aperto al pubblico più alto di Catania. Riaperta al pubblico recentemente, è divenuta (con l'adiacente monastero benedettino) l'attrazione turistica più rilevante di Catania (assieme al Duomo, il teatro Massimo Bellini e il castello Ursino). La sua costruzione è posteriore all'eruzione dell'Etna del 1669e sostituisce un tempio più antico rinascimentale.
All'interno sono conservate le CANDELORE usate per la famosissima festa di Sant'Agata.
In una delle navate ci sono diverse tombe di soldati morti durante le guerre.
L'ingresso ovviamente è gratuito ,come lo è anche per il monastero che adesso ospita all'interno l'università degli studi di Catania che però è visitabile anche con la guida (scelta consigliata).
 The church of San Nicolò l'Arena, located in Piazza Dante, measures 105 meters long and 48 meters wide, with a maximum height of about 66 meters at the dome, it is the largest and tallest Catholic church in Sicily , with the panoramic observation point open to the highest public in Catania. Recently reopened to the public, it has become (with the adjacent Benedictine monastery) the most important tourist attraction in Catania (together with the Duomo, the Massimo Bellini theater and the Ursino castle). Its construction dates back to the eruption of Etna in 1669 and replaces an older Renaissance temple.
Inside are preserved the CANDELORE used for the famous feast of Sant'Agata.
In one of the aisles there are several graves of soldiers who died during the wars.
Admission is obviously free, as it is also for the monastery which now houses the University of Catania which can also be visited with a guide (recommended).

Very interesting history of this construction, with different architectural styles, volcanic materials and techniques.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This church is probably one of the best places you can visit in Catania. All because of its accessible rooftop! Just for 3 euro you get access to 150 stairs. After this - panoramatic view of the city will open for you. It's great for photos and enjoying light cold wind in these heights. You can also perfectly see the majestic Etna vulcan creeping to the sky. ?✅
